Mia's newest antic
Hi family,
Just thought you should all be updated on the going-ons of my little girl. Some of you know that I had a glucose screening test/bloodwork done at my doctor's appointment last week. This screens for any abnormalities in my blood as well as for gestational diabetes. And like at every appointment, my doctor says that no news is good news. So when I saw her calling me this afternoon, I started freaking out that I had failed the glucose test and would have to go back to get screened again for diabetes. My blood sugar levels were normal.
However, my platelet count was low. Platelets are the things inside your blood that clot. It prevents you from bleeding too much basically, so you want a healthy amount of them. A platelet count of 150 (well, really it's 150,000) is normal. I started out this pregnancy with a count of 240, but as of last week, I had dropped down to 110. My doctor was a little, but not too concerned. It could just be the pregnancy hormones that are making them drop like that, which happens in 2-5% of pregnant women. But if it gets down below 100, she wants me to see a hematologist. She said that it's important that they don't drop too low, because it could mean that I'll lose a huge amount of blood during labor (and I don't know about you, but I'd rather go through labor WITHOUT having to get blood from the blood bank). If it's too low, that also means that they won't give me an epidural, because they're afraid just the needle poking me in the back will cause me to lose too much blood. AND I REALLY WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE AN EPIDURAL.
So anyway, the plan is for right now, to do bloodwork and a platelet count every 4 weeks. That's not too big a deal for me because I see my doctor about that often anyway. Hopefully, they won't drop below 100. I'm not too worried about it, I have a good feeling that everything will be ok. But if you guys could just keep me in your prayers, that'd be awesome. Man, this little girl has thrown me for so many loops. She better get it all out now, because I'm expecting a little angel when she comes out :-)
